January 5, 2022--En route to Montevideo, Uruguay

After a stop in Punta del Este, Uruguay, an announcement came late last night (Tu 4-Jan-2022) that Oceania had to cancel all remaining South American cruises this year (due to the "recent introduction of onerous and prohibitive restrictions for entry into Argentina by sea."

For us, this means we will need to disembark a day early in Montevideo, Uruguay (not Buenos Aires). Oceania has chartered flights to Miami to get us back to the states by the morning of January 8. While we hate to give up the first class seats we had from Buenos Aires, it will be worth it to have Oceania responsible that we can get home. We've found a Miami-Denver flight (nonstop being a strong consideration) that will get us home after midnight (so early Jan. 9), unless something else interferes.

We can't be more pleased with how Oceania has responded to this situation, whether travel was booked through the cruise line or not. And they'll do all the necessary testing required. This is a terrible time to be the head of a cruise company. And we're sorry for our friends Bill and Charlie Welsh, who were to board Marina Jan. 28 for their 60th anniversary on nearly the same cruise we are about to complete.

THEREFORE, we are suspending the blog. We'd like to think we can update it after we get home (especially for the Beagle Channel, Cape Horn, and Ushuaia), but don't hold your breath--we will try.

 December 1-26, 2021, Part 3--Wine and such Oceania has a tagline-- The Finest Cuisine at Sea . I’m certain those who have sailed Silversea or Crystal (if they’re back sailing) might debate that statement, but Suzy or I can’t. Please note Suzy’s recent foodie blog entry. What I’d like to do is add a bit more detail about the food & wine experience.   Oceania’s 1,200 guest O-Class (Marina & Riviera) ships have four fine dining restaurants (Jacques <think Pepin>, Toscana, Polo and Red Ginger) where reservations are required. Our current San Antonio, Chile to Buenos Aires leg has only 410 guests so reservations have not been a problem. Saturday, December 25, 2021--Sailing the Chilean Fjords Merry Christmas! Many have asked us what Christmas is like when you are cruising. In fact, it’s really very pleasant. The crew goes all out to decorate the ship. In addition to the large tree on the atrium stairs, there must be 15 other trees around the ship. If there’s one live poinsettia, there are 200. And decorations are everywhere. It’s really very festive. And nearly everyone exchanges holiday greetings of some kind as you pass. The Christmas with masks we will remember a long time! We try to bring a little something to hang on our door, as do other guests. This year our suite is at the end of a hall with not too many other passengers, and our 'wreath' at right fell off the door the first night, so we just brought it inside for our cabin crew to enjoy. A gingerbread village graced the atrium (top) and one house was delivered to our suite (below), a little the worse for wear after a week. ...
